What “4-point” actually counts

The 4-point system scores defects, not metres. Each flaw is penalised by its length:

Defect lengthPoints
under 3 cm1
3 cm to under 10 cm2
10 cm to under 20 cm3
20 cm or full width4

No single defect can score more than 4 points, and the total is normalised to points per 100 m² (some buyers use per 100 yd² — confirm which).

The acceptance line

A widely used threshold is 40 points or fewer per 100 m² for a first-quality (A) roll. Below that, the roll is downgraded or rejected. Different buyers set different bars, so the number only means something once you have agreed the standard in writing.

Why it matters to you

We run in-line and final inspection on our own line. If your brand has a stricter internal bar than 40/100 m², tell us at enquiry and we will inspect to your standard and record the score.

Common questions

Is 40 points always the pass mark?

No. It is a common default, but many brands write their own acceptance level into the contract. Always confirm the number and the area basis (m² or yd²) before bulk.

Does 4-point cover colour difference between rolls?

Not directly — it scores physical defects. Shade variation is judged separately, usually against an approved sample. Ask for a shade band in writing if it matters to you.
